The largest family in the catalogue, and the one with the most output formats per box. A Rinstrum indicator's automatic output is selected by a single menu item, and every one of the settings that item offers is a separate parser here.

Catalogue entries

The 300 and X300 series name their formats FMT_1 to FMT_6 where the 5000, C500 and 400 series name the same shapes Format A to G. Both spellings are catalogued, because the installer reads the name off their own box's menu.

The formats

Each one is a separate parser, because which format a site chose is not reliably detectable from the stream — you pick what the box's own menu is set to. Example frames below are produced by that format's own encoder and read back through its own parser.

Format A

Format A — the standard Rinstrum output

Sign, a seven-character weight and one status character. The factory default on every model in our manual set, and called Auto.A or FMT.A depending on the series.

The status character multiplexes two different things: G and N give gross and net, while U, O, M and E report underload, overload, motion or error and say nothing about gross versus net. A frame reporting motion therefore carries no weight type at all, which is why nothing downstream is allowed to assume one.

Format B

Format B — status first, with a unit field

Format A's status character moved to the front, with a three-character unit appended. Offered on the 5000, 5100, 5200, 5230, C500, C510 and 400 series; the 300 and X300 series do not have it.

Two independent instability signals travel in the same frame — the status character can read motion, and the unit field is blanked to spaces whenever the reading is unstable. Either one alone is enough to mark the reading unsettled, which matters because when the status character reports motion it cannot simultaneously report gross versus net.

Format C

Format C — fully de-multiplexed

Weight type, motion, centre-of-zero and range each get their own character. Auto.C or FMT.C on the 5000, 5100, 5200, 5230, C500, C510 and 400 series; FMT_2 "Ranger C" on the 300 and X300.

The format worth choosing if you have the choice. Because the flags are separate rather than multiplexed, a frame that is in motion still says whether it is gross or net — which formats A and B cannot do.

Format D

Format D — weight and nothing else

Sign and a seven-character weight. No status field of any kind. Offered on the 5000, 5100, 5200, 5230, C500, C510 and 400 series.

Because there is no status field, a reading from this format leaves stability unknown rather than asserting it — and it carries no weight type either. Which value is transmitted is decided by the indicator's own source setting (displayed, gross, net or total), which the frame never states. This is exactly the case the gateway's software-stability fallback exists to cover.

Format E

Format E — leading zeros and a mode word

The only Rinstrum format using the alternative weight field, which transmits leading zeros and a trailing decimal point when the reading has no decimal places, and the only one with a four-character gross/net mode word. Not offered on the C500, C510, 300 or X300.

Its capacity flag does not distinguish over-range from under-range — a single character covers both — so the polarity character has to resolve it. The same pattern shows up in the Mettler and Rice Lake formats, and getting it wrong turns an underload into an overload.

Format F

Format F — Condec compatible

The one format in the family whose unit is a single coded letter rather than free text, and the one drawn with an explicit CR LF terminator instead of the STX/ETX envelope the others use. AUTO.F on the C500 and parts of the 400 series; FMT_5 "Condec" on the 300 and X300.

Two 400-series manuals write the unit as an unsized field and never define it; three other manuals define it as a single character with a fixed four-letter vocabulary. We follow the documented reading rather than inventing a wider variant for the two silent manuals — a decision recorded in the parser itself so nobody quietly reverses it.

Format G

Format G — Format C plus a traffic light

Format C with the sign character widened into a combined sign and traffic-light control byte, for driving a D840 remote light. FMT.G on the 400 series, FMT_6 on the 300 and X300.

The leading byte encodes polarity and two lamp states at once. We publish the lamp states rather than discarding them — they are setpoint outputs an integrator may well want. Note that with both lamps off this format is byte-identical to Format C, which is inherent to the format and harmless: they ship as separate entries and you pick what the box is set to.

FMT_3 Gedge C2

A third-party emulation offered only on the 300 and X300 series. An STX-framed record with an eight-character weight, gross/net, motion, range and centre-of-zero characters.

The one format in the family with no separate sign character — the polarity travels inside the weight field itself. Its range character has three documented values and no neutral one, so a space is accepted and read as in-range; the alternative would be rejecting every valid frame.

FMT_4 AnD

FMT_4 "AnD" — A&D emulation

Rinstrum emulating the A&D standard data format. Offered only on the 300 and X300 series.

The Rinstrum manuals draw this frame with no comma separators and print no worked example, while the A&D format it emulates is comma-delimited and otherwise character-for-character identical. Rather than pick one reading and be wrong on half the installs, separators are optional: a comma is unambiguous, so accepting it cannot mis-frame a comma-free stream.
